- 2. Preliminary data on the reading materials digital repository
In order to create a digital repository that is useful and relevant in terms of cultural and educational content, texts from various categories were selected:
- reading recommendations made by teachers
- reading recommendations made by pupils
- reading recommendations made by parents
- reading recommendations made by the LEMI team
Simultaneously with the selection of the texts, the following steps regarding linguistic assessment and text processing were carried out:
a. We calculated the readability score of each text (see also Section 3 - Preliminary data on the analysis of the complexity of Romanian texts - below). It also indicates the level of linguistic complexity of the text in question. Texts with too high a score (>5) were either removed from the repository or adapted by simplification (see b.).
Metadata of the reading materials for the LEMI platform
b. Texts with a high level of linguistic complexity were adapted by simplifying vocabulary and syntactic structures. The readability formula identified by the LEMI team (see below) was also applied to the simplified texts in order to assign them to the appropriate category (grade/age/level).

- 3. Preliminary data on the analysis of the complexity of Romanian texts
The LEMI team developed a readability formula for the Romanian language by adapting the calculation formulas used for English texts: the Flesch-Kincaid Readability Test, the Gunning Fog Index, the SMOG Index and the Dale-Chall Readability Formula. The research we conducted revealed that two calculation formulas, namely the Gunning Fog Index and the SMOG Index, are closer to the actual readability scores in Romanian.

The readability formula for Romanian texts has already been identified. It is to be calibrated by recurrent text processing, by comparison with existing formulae and by classroom validation.
